Banking fraud in India tripled in a single year
The Reserve Bank of India's FY25 Annual Report shows reported banking fraud losses jumped from ₹12,230 Cr to ₹36,014 Cr — a 194% year-on-year rise, and the highest ever recorded.
What this really means
Digital payment fraud accounts for more than 55% of all reported incidents.
Small-ticket card and UPI frauds under ₹1 lakh made up 87% of case volume.
Average time between fraud and customer noticing: over 24 hours.
Only a fraction of stolen funds are ever recovered — early blocking is the single biggest recovery factor.
